Softball’s Seventh Inning Rally Falls a Run Short
April 09, 2017 | Softball
ATHENS, Ohio – In another thrilling finish, the Ball State softball team rallied for a pair of seventh inning runs, but it was not enough in a 3-2 series ending loss at Ohio Sunday afternoon.
Despite the setback, the Cardinals (25-18, 9-2 Mid-American Conference) picked up their fourth MAC series win of the season by sweeping the Bobcats (26-10, 7-4 MAC) in a Saturday doubleheader.
With just one hit entering the seventh inning, the Ball State offense finally came to life courtesy of a leadoff single to right field from junior first baseman Danae King (Glendale, Ariz./Phoneix College). Saturday's second game hero, freshman right fielder Kennedy Wynn (New Albany, Ind./New Albany), made it back-to-back hits with a single of her own to the right side of the field.
Trailing 3-0, sophomore designated player Madison Lee (Cerritos, Calif./Cerritos) came through with the Cardinals third consecutive hit by smashing a single to left-center field to bring home junior pinch runner Cadie O'Donnell (Salina, Kan./Barton C.C.) and make the score 3-1.
With runners on the corners and no outs, junior shortstop Brittany Hopper (Scottsdale, Ariz./Phoenix College) hit a hard grounder to the Ohio second baseman who could only tag the bag at second for the force out. This allowed Wynn to score from third, cutting the Bobcats advantage to 3-2.
Unfortunately, a strikeout and groundout ended the Ball State rally and stranded what could have been the game-tying run on first.
Ohio took the lead with a third inning sacrifice fly, before hitting solo home runs in both the fourth and fifth innings.
Aside from the three-hit seventh, Ball State's only other hit came courtesy of a two-out single through the left side by Lee in the top of the fifth. Lee finished the day 2-for-3 with a RBI.
Despite limiting the Bobcats to three hits and a pair of earned runs over 3.2 innings of work, freshman pitcher Alyssa Rothwell (Ashville, Ohio/Teays Valley) suffered the loss to fall to 4-2 on the year. Rothwell also finished the day with four strikeouts.
The Ball State softball team returns to action Wednesday, when it travels to DeKalb, Ill., to finish a three-game series verses Northern Illinois with a 3 p.m. ET / 2 p.m. CT first pitch.
The Cardinals have already won the season series versus the Huskies (18-15. 6-5 MAC), courtesy of a doubleheader sweep in Muncie Tuesday (April 4). Ball State won the first game 3-2 and the nightcap 6-4, both in come-from-behind fashion.
