MUNCIE, Ind. – Three recent Ball State football players were named to the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame (NFF) Hampshire Honor Society. The society is comprised of college football players from all divisions of play who each maintained a cumulative 3.2 GPA or better throughout their college careers.
Offensive linemen Steven Bell and Drake Miller, along with tight end Sam Brunner, were the Ball State representatives on the prestigious list. Bell earned 34 starts on the offensive line in his career at Ball State. He was a starter at offensive tackle during the 2013 GoDaddy Bowl.
Miller was named the winner of the team's Gene Booker Academic Award following the 2016 season. He was a three-time member of the Academic All-MAC football team. Miller finished his career with 32 consecutive starts in the trenches.
Brunner lined up as the starting tight end 22 times over the last three years for the Cardinals. He finished his senior campaign with eight catches for 80 yards, highlighted by a touchdown in the win over Florida Atlantic in September.
Both Bell and Brunner completed their Ball State bachelor's degree in December.
The 1,089 players honored in the 2017 NFF Hampshire Honor Society sets a new high water mark, eclipsing the previous record of 882 honorees in 2016. The initiative has honored 7,723 student-athletes since its inception, and the program has experienced growth every year in either members or school participation since its launch in 2007.
Qualifications for membership in the NFF Hampshire Honor Society include: being a starter or a significant contributor in one's final year of eligibility (or a senior who has declared for the NFL Draft) at an NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision, Football Championship Subdivision, Division II, Division III or an NAIA college or university; achieving a 3.2 cumulative grade point average throughout entire course of undergraduate study; and meeting all NCAA/NAIA-mandated progress towards degree requirements.
The Ball State football team is currently in the middle of its spring practice season. The Cardinals will conclude their spring schedule on Saturday, April 15 with the annual Spring Game. Start time is slated for noon.
