Ball State's Olivia Huffman Rounding into One of MAC's Top Backstops
Muncie, Ind. -- Ball State softball was in the market for a new catcher coming into the 2017 season. Â The Cardinals, sans four of the five people to play the position over the last few years, had a junior college catcher lined up in the offseason. Â That deal fell through, however, opening the door for sophomore transfer Olivia Huffman.
Huffman played her freshman season for the South Dakota Coyotes. Â Seeking a transfer after the season, Huffman didn't have a place to go until late in the process. Â A coach she knew turned out to be a common connection with Ball State assistant Josh Johnson through their days playing men's fast-pitch. Â When the Cardinals found themselves needing a backstop, Johnson and Huffman were put in touch and soon enough she was on campus in Muncie.
Now, as the season thrusts toward its finish, Huffman leads Mid-American Conference catchers in fielding percentage and has gunned down 10 base-stealers. Â Ball State All-Access sat down with Huffman recently to discuss her road to Muncie and her success since joining the Cardinals in the fall.
