March 27, 2017 | Softball
CLEVELAND, Ohio – After helping guide the Ball State softball team to a 3-1 record last week, junior second baseman Maddy Labrador (Lexington, S.C./Spartanburg Methodist) has been named the Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week.
Labrador led the Ball State offense with a .571 batting average last week, including a .667 (8-for-12) average in helping guide the Cardinals to a MAC series win at Buffalo. She reached base safely and scored at least one run in all four games, plus finished the week with a team-high seven runs scored.
Labrador, who doubled in each game of the series at Buffalo, opened the week by reaching base in all four plate appearances in the team's 10-2 (6) win over Butler. She scored three runs in the game and drew a pair of walks.
She opened MAC play with a leadoff home run in Friday's first game at Buffalo, scoring what proved to be the game-winning run, and added a RBI double later in the contest. In the nightcap, Labrador went 3-for-4 at the plate with a pair of runs scored. She also drove in the final run of the game with a RBI single in the sixth.
Labrador closed her first weekend in the MAC with another 3-for-4 day at the plate, doubling to leadoff the series finale at Buffalo and scoring later in the inning on a passed ball. She also tallied a RBI single in the fifth.
Labrador enters the week with a .309 batting average, seven doubles and five home runs. She is also second on the squad with 23 runs scored and fourth on the team in on base percentage at .394.
The Ball State softball team returns to action Wednesday, when it closes non-conference play with a scheduled 5 p.m. first pitch at Indiana State. The Cardinals will then host Miami in its first home MAC series of the season with a single game Friday (3 p.m.) and a doubleheader Saturday (1 p.m.).
