March 16, 2017 | Women's Basketball
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Ball State women's basketball team (21-11) Women's National Invitation Tournament run was cut short after suffering a 71-58 loss Thursday night to Big Ten foe Indiana (21-10) at the Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.
The Cardinals WNIT appearance marked their fifth straight and eighth overall. Brady Sallee, who is in his fifth season at Ball State, is the only head coach in program history to take the Cardinals to five straight WNITs. He led the Cardinals to a 21-11 overall record this year which marks only the sixth time in program history Ball State has had a 20+ win season. Sallee is also only the second coach to accomplish back-to-back 20+ winning seasons, 2015-16 (22-10) and 2016-17 (21-11).
Junior forward Moriah Monaco paced the Cardinals with 17 points and senior center Renee Bennett ended her four-year career with a 12 point performance. The 2017 Mid-American Conference Sixth Player award winner sophomore guard Destiny Washington, led Ball State defensively with eight rebounds while also chipping in eight points on the night.
The Cardinals won the opening tip and took the early 2-0 lead over the Hoosiers which came off of a layup from sophomore guard Carmen Grande. After that, in the next five minutes of play the Hoosiers went on a 18-4 run that eventually led to a 28-12 advantage for Indiana heading into the second quarter of play.
Indiana continued to play well eventually going up by 23 (35-12) with 6:22 left in the second quarter. Ball State fought back in the remaining four minutes of the half and showed no resilience outscoring Indiana 17-5 to cut the Hoosiers lead to 11 (40-29) at intermission. Junior guard Frannie Frazier and Monaco knocked down two 3-point baskets in a matter of minutes to spark the Cardinals run.
But the Hoosiers opened the third quarter with a 13-4 scoring spree to go back up by 20 (53-33) which was capped off by two free throws from Kym Royster. Frazier hit a layup at the 3:20 mark trying to put the Cardinals back on track but both teams turned up their defenses and went without a field goal for over a three minute stretch. Monaco would be the first to score for both teams after a jumper at the buzzer.
Ball State began the final quarter down by 17 (57-40) but Washington's quick basket at the 9:17 mark led to a 9-0 run for the Cardinals to put them within eight (57-49) with 7:18 remaining. It was the Hoosiers strong start at the start of the game that would eventually catch up with the Cardinals and would prove to be too much for Ball State overcome. Indiana quickly got back on track after a Amanda Cahill layup that would give back IU over a 10-point edge (62-51) at the 6:05 mark. After that, Indiana held onto a double digit lead the remainder of the contest and would advance to the second round of the WNIT.
