Matt Szews Named National Freshman of the Week

MUNCIE, Ind. – Ball State men's volleyball freshman Matt Szews earned the first award of his collegiate career Monday when he was named Off the Block/Springbak, Inc. National Freshman of the Week.
Off the Block is a website that started in January 2011 and has become the nation's leader in college men's volleyball coverage.
Springbak, Inc. is the official sponsor of the 2017 Freshmen All-American Team and National Freshman of the Week and produces high performance footwear used by professional athletes from the NFL, NBA, MLB and U.S. Olympic teams and the top college teams in the nation.
Szews was honored for his performances against No. 1 Ohio State and McKendree. Szews had a team-high 14 kills on a .333 attack percentage in a three-game loss to No. 1 Ohio State on Thursday. Szews also finished with 10 kills on a .348 attack percentage, while adding two aces and a match-high eight digs in a sweep against McKendree on Saturday.
Szews followed up those performances with powerful play Tuesday against MIVA rival Fort Wayne. Szews knocked down a team-high 16 kills for a .444 attack percentage. He also added eight digs, three block assists and one ace.
The left-handed outside attacker has tallied 149 kills, 56 digs and 24 total blocks so far in his freshman season.
Szews and the Cardinal squad will suit up again Friday, Feb. 10 when they travel to Fort Wayne. The first serve is set for 7 p.m.
