February 07, 2017 | Football
MUNCIE, Ind. – Ball State football assistant coach Chevis Jackson was recently named the Mid-American Conference Recruiter of the Year for the 2017 cycle by 247Sports.
Jackson, now in his second year as Ball State's defensive backs coach, played a key part in recruiting eight high school players from the state of Georgia to sign with the Cardinals for the upcoming fall season. Jackson recruited several of the class headliners in receivers Khalil Newton, Justin Gibbs and Justin Hall, along with corner back Verenzo Holmes. All four players were rated three stars by 247Sports.
This is Jackson's first on-field coaching job after working as a graduate assistant at South Alabama and then LSU.
Jackson helped lead LSU to the 2007 Bowl Championship Series national championship before being selected in the third round of the 2008 NFL Draft by the Atlanta Falcons. He played four years of professional football with five teams and then joined the coaching ranks.
247Sports rated Ball State's signing class as the second highest in the Mid-American Conference.
Ball State opens its 2017 schedule with four consecutive non-conference games. The Cardinals kick off the season on Sept. 2 at Big Ten foe Illinois before hosting UAB and Tennessee Tech in back-to-back weekends on Sept. 9 and Sept. 16. Ball State winds down its non-conference slate on Sept. 23 at two-time defending Conference USA champion Western Kentucky.
