Cardinal Notes:
The Ball State women's basketball team is now tied for the top spot in the Mid-American Conference after its 81-73 defeat over Central Michigan Saturday afternoon in Worthen Arena. With the win, the Cardinals improved to 20-8 overall and 13-3 in conference action. Fifth-year Ball State head women's basketball coach Brady Sallee becomes only the second coach in program history to have back-to-back 20 win seasons. Ball State also earned a first round bye to the upcoming 2017 MAC Tournament in Cleveland with the victory over the Chippewas. This marks the fourth time under Sallee the Cardinals have punched their ticket straight to Cleveland.
Junior forward Moriah Monaco became the 27th player in program history to reach 1,000 points Saturday against Central Michigan after a 20 point performance. This marks the first time in program history that the Cardinals have had three 1,000 point scorers in a single season. Senior guard Jill Morrison along with classmate center Renee Bennett accomplished the same feat earlier this year.
If the Mid-American Conference Tournament were to begin today, the Cardinals would be the No. 2 seed. Ball State would be the third game played in Cleveland and would face either No. 7 Buffalo or No. 10 Miami.
Wednesday's game against Eastern Michigan will mark the 75th time in program history the two schools have met with the Eagles leading the all-time series, 38-35. Ball State has won eight out of the last 11 meetings over Eastern Michigan, which includes a sweep over the Eagles last season at home by a score of 76-54 and then again in Ypsilanti on Feb. 27 by a score of 67-63. The Eagles' defeated the Cardinals last season in the semifinals of the Mid-American Conference Tournament, 67-53. Ball State won its first meeting this season over Eastern Michigan on Jan. 18 by a score of 78-49 in Worthen Arena.
Ball State is riding a six-game win streak on the road when it plays at Eastern Michigan Wednesday. The Cardinals have only suffered one MAC loss on the road all season and that was at Central Michigan (1/11)
After tonight's contest the Cardinals return home for their final Mid-American Conference regular season contest of the year. Ball State hosts the Toledo Rockets Saturday at 2 p.m. in Worthen Arena. The Cardinals will say good-bye to their seniors Renee Bennett, Jill Morrison and Calyn Hosea.
