Four-Run Fifth Not Enough in Softball Loss to Boston College
February 19, 2017 | Softball
TUCSON, Ariz. - - The Ball State softball team closed play in the Wildcat Invitational with a 6-4 loss to Boston College Sunday morning at No. 10 Arizona's Hillenbrand Stadium.
Â
With the loss, the Cardinals finish play in the Wildcat Invitational with a 2-3 record which includes wins over Drake (17-2 / 5 inn.) and Abilene Christian (5-3). Ball State is now 3-7 overall on the year.
Â
The freshman duo of Janae Hogg (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral) and Kennedy Wynn (New Albany, Ind./New Albany) led the Ball State offense with two hits apiece Sunday, plus drove in three of the Cardinals' four runs.
Â
The Eagles (6-2) opened the scoring in the bottom of the first on a two-out RBI single from Tatiana Cortez, and pulled ahead 2-0 thanks to a leadoff home run from Chloe Sharabba in the bottom of the third.
Â
After being held scoreless for the first four innings, the Ball State offense came to life in the top of the fifth, scoring four runs on three hits, a pair of walks and a hit batter to take a 4-2 lead. Senior third baseman Amanda Arnett (Monroe, Mich./Monroe) opened the inning with a single up the middle, while sophomore catcher Olivia Huffman (Woodbury, Minn./South Dakota) and sophomore second baseman Aeshia Miles (Lawrenceville, Ga./Collins Hill) drew a walk to load the bases.
Â
Ball State's hero on the opening day of the Wildcat Invitational, senior center fielder Rachel Houck (Greenfield, Ind./Louisville) brought home the Cardinals' first run of the game with a seven-pitch walk. Two batters later, freshman designated player Hogg slashed her second single of the game to drive in a run and tie the score at 2-2.
Â
The Cardinals were not done scoring there, however, as freshman left fielder Wynn smashed a two-run single up the middle to give Ball State a 4-2 advantage.
Â
Boston College would get one of the runs back in the bottom of the fifth, as a RBI groundout to second cut the Ball State advantage to 4-3. However, freshman pitcher Darcie Huber (Greenfield, Ind./Greenfield Central) stop the Eagles rally with an inning-ending strikeout.
Â
Unfortunately, the Eagles would reclaim the lead in the bottom of the sixth on a Sharabba sacrifice fly and a two-out, two-run home run from Jordan Chimento to win the game 6-4.
Â
Over 5.1 innings of work, Huber struck out four batters while allowing 10 hits and five earned runs. Junior Carolyn Wilmes (Evansville, Ind./Mater Dei) pitched the final 0.2 innings, surrendering one hit and one run, while adding a strikeout.
Â
The Ball State softball team returns to action Friday, when it opens play in the Citrus Classic I at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla., with games versus Oakland (11 a.m.) and Lehigh (3:30 p.m.).
