No. 6 Louisville Hands Ball State Its First Loss
February 19, 2017 | Baseball
CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Ball State baseball team wrapped up its opening weekend in Florida with a 10-4 setback to No. 6 Louisville. Ball State went 2-1 in its trip to Clearwater, Florida, which included a victory over No. 22 Maryland.
Louisville (3-0) never trailed in the match-up of the Cardinals. Brendan McKay's two-run homer in the third inning gave Louisville an early 3-0 lead. The two teams then exchanged runs before Louisville erupted with a six-run sixth inning to pull away from Ball State (2-1). Drew Ellis highlighted the big frame with a two-run double.
Senior shortstop Alex Maloney led Ball State's offense by going 3-for-4 with a double and a pair of RBI singles. Junior Seth Freed notched a two doubles and scored a run. Junior Justin Kirkpatrick added a pinch-hit, two-run single in the eighth inning. On the pitching front, freshman John Baker had an impressive collegiate debut. The right-hander tossed the final three innings for Ball State, struck out three batters and limited Louisville to just one hit.
This was the first meeting between the two teams since 2012. Louisville now leads the all-time series by a count of 17-8.
Ball State returns to action next weekend at the Caravelle Resort Tournament in Conway, South Carolina. Ball State's opening game of that tournament is on Friday, Feb. 24 against host and defending national champion Coastal Carolina.
