Men's Tennis Ends Fall Season At MAC Invite

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Ball State University men's tennis team ended its fall season at the Mid-American Conference Invite at West Hills Country Club Sunday which was hosted by Western Michigan.
In Flight 1 singles action, Nemnaja Guzina went 1-2 after suffering a straight set loss in the main draw, Nemanja rebounded in consolation action earning a three set thriller over Binghamton's Kushaan Nath, 4-6, 6-2, 10-8. Nemanja would then lose to Binghamton's Ludovico Cestarollo, 6-4, 6-3 in the finals. Twin brother Marko Guzina found success in the Flight 2 singles bracket. Marko advanced to the championship match Sunday morning but lost to host Western Michigan's Jannik Opitz, 6-3, 6-4. Marko had knocked off Toledo's Vincent Anzalone, and the Broncos Eric Olivarez to make it to the championship.
Thibault De Negri, Conner Andersen, Chris Adams, Bryce Bonin and Tom Carney all dropped their first round matches in their respective flights. Bonin won the consolation Flight 5 singles bracket. Bonin earned wins over Binghamton's Sebastian Quiros (4-6, 6-3, 10-6) before taking the final from the Bearcats Inigo Irazusta, 4-6, 6-3, 10-7.Â
Carney also was victorious in Flight 6 singles consolation action. After defeating Binghamton's Josh Druger in three sets, Carney took the final match 6-1, 1-6, 11-9 versus Toledo's Juan Carranza. In that same bracket, Luke Wiese beat Carranza, 6-3, 0-6, 6-3 to advance to the semifinals and was then crowned the Flight 6 champion with his 6-4, 7-6 (4) win over Western Michigan's Billy Heckman.Â
Jan Jirus took a 1-6, 6-1, 6-3 decision over Alejandro Pena in the main draw in Flight 4 singles but fell 6-4, 6-1 in the next round to the Broncos Nick Schnodel.
In doubles action, the twosome of Carney and Jirus won the Flight 3 doubles championship. Carney and Jirus took down Toledo's duo of Carranza and Stephen Miller by a score of 8-1 in their first match. The Cardinals' twosome proceeded to knock off Binghamton's doubles tandem of Irazusta and Druger, 8-4 before taking the final match from the Rockets Luka VItosevic and Northern Illinois Victor Spolidorio, 8-4. Nemanja Guzina alongside partneer De Negri advanced to the semi -finals of the Doubles Flight 1 but lost as did Marko Guzina and Andersen in the Flight two doubles bracket.
The Ball State men's tennis team will open its spring season at Big Ten foe Indiana, Jan. 15 beginning a 2 p.m.
