Women’s Swim and Dive Edge Out Illinois State

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State women's swimming and diving team competed in a close race with Illinois State Friday night. In a down-to-the-wire contest, the Cardinals were able to defeat the Redbirds, 152-148.
The Cardinals started off the evening with a first place finish in the 200 medley relay. Audrey Schank, Amanda Kedzierski, Maryn Meldrum and Peighton Gilbert marked a time of 1:45.78 to earn 11 points. The Ball State also earned the third place spot, earning two points. Anne Vormohr, Cailin Merck, Sophie Bader and Lauren Elston posted a time of 1:49.76.
Kayla Molnar touched the wall at 10:43.05 in the 1000 freestyle, earning second place and four points. Molnar earned the second place spot in the 500 free as well. Molnar posted a time of 5:15.49 to earn four more points for the Cardinals.
Liz Madison earned two points for the Cardinals with a fourth place finish in the 1000 free (10:59.12). Madison also added four more points for Ball State with a second place finish in the 200 breaststroke (2:27.15).
Cassidy Blackwin had the highest finish in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:00.25. Blackwin placed fourth, earning two points for the Cardinals.
Audrey Schank earned the first place spot in the 100 backstroke with a time of 57.70. Schank also placed first in the 200 backstroke after posting a time of 2:06.46.
Amanda Kedzierski earned three points for the Cardinals with a third place finish in the 100 breaststroke. Kedzierski marked a time of 1:06.80. Kedzierski also earned the first place spot in the 100 freestyle with a time of 54.05.
Sophie Bader and Maryn Meldrum went 1-2 in the 200 butterfly. Bader earned the first place spot with a final time of 2:07.79. Meldrum earned the second place spot and four points after touching the wall at 2:09.41. The two also finished 1-2 in the 100 butterfly. Bader took the top spot with a time of 57.89. Meldrum again right behind her with a time of 58.12.
Peighton Gilbert and Anne Vormohr also went 1-2 in an event. Gilbert earned the top spot in the 50 freestyle (24.50) with Vormohr right behind her with a time of 24.90. Vormohr and Gilbert were also in a close race in the 100 freestyle. Vormohr marked a time of 54.21 to earn third place with Gilbert right behind her in the fourth spot (54.92).
On the boards, the Cardinals dominated taking the top two spots in both the 1 and 3-meter. Rachel Bertram earned the first place spot in the 1-meter with a season high score of 288.90. This score also placed Bertram in the third spot in school history. Bertram earned the top spot in the 3-meter with a score of 270.08. Caitlin Locante also posted a season score high of 220.20 to earn second place and four points for Ball State in the 1-meter. Locante also posted her season high in the 3-meter dive with a score of 247.20 to earn second place.
"It was great performances from both divers today," said head diving coach Nick Gayes. "It was really good to see them put everything together and get a little bit more consistent as we move toward to mid-season. I think they are setting themselves up for a successful rest of the season."
The Cardinals ended the meet with a second and third place finish in the 400 freestyle relay to secure the victory. Ball State posted a time of 3:35.40 to earn second along with a time of 3:41.60 for the third place spot.
"We were excited to earn the win tonight against a strong, well-coached program," said head coach Kristy Patterson. "It was a back and forth battle with every event. Our team stepped up and raced well. We are still pushing through training so it was nice to see some improvements as reassurance that we are moving in the right direction."
The Ball State women's swimming and diving team will be in action again tomorrow (Nov. 11) in a co-ed meet with Tiffin. The meet will be at Lewellen Aquatics Center and is set to begin at 1 p.m.
