Volleyball Falls to Miami Despite Solid Defensive Effort
October 21, 2017 | Women's Volleyball
MUNCIE, Ind. - - Despite a record-setting performance on defense, the Ball State women's volleyball team suffered a 3-1 (25-22, 20-25, 25-20, 25-22) setback to league-leader Miami in Mid-American Conference play Saturday night at Worthen Arena.
In all, the Cardinals' (14-9; 6-4 MAC) backcourt tallied 103 digs, a rally scoring (2001-present) record for a four-set match, with junior right side Brooklyn Goodsel (Corry, Pa./Corry Area) securing a career-high 28 and sophomore libero Kate Avila (Yorktown, Ind./Yorktown) adding a season-high 33.
"I thought our defense did a tremendous job tonight against a talented Miami attack," Ball State head coach Kelli Miller said. "Our back row made some spectacular plays and really kept us in the match. Their effort translated into a record-setting night on defense with 103 digs. Unfortunately, Miami's defense did a solid job as well and really limited what we could do offensively."
Unfortunately, the RedHawks (16-7; 8-2 MAC) defense played just as strong, limiting the Cardinals to 49 kills and a .148 (49-23-176) attack percentage in the four-set match to secure the first road victory in the series since Ball State won at Millett Hall in 2010.
Playing against her sister's squad, sophomore setter Amber Seaman (Carmel, Ind./Brebeuf) logged her 12th double-double of the season with 41 assists and 11 digs. She also scored four kills, while hitting .333 (4-1-9).
Rounding out Ball State's top contributors on defense was junior defensive specialist Lauren Schreiner (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North) who fell one dig shy of her career-high with 18.
Offensively, sophomore middle Sydnee VanBeek (St. John, Ind./Illiana Christian) smashed a team-high 12 kills, while serving up Ball State's lone ace. Goodsel was the only other Cardinal with double-digit kills, scoring 10 for her second double-double of the weekend and seventh of the season. She also collected three block assists and logged a .964 reception percentage on 27 attempts.
Rounding out Ball State's top contributors on offense were junior outside Ellie Dunn (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) with nine kills and junior middle Emily Holland (Madison, Ind./Madison) with seven. Holland also led all players with five total blocks (one solo and four assists).
Katie Tomasic paced the Miami attack with 18 kills, while Maeve McDonald led five RedHawks in double figures with 24 digs. As a team, the visitors from Oxford, Ohio, finished the night with a .180 (62-25-206) attack percentage.
The Ball State women's volleyball team returns to action Friday, when it opens its final home weekend of the 2017 regular season versus Central Michigan. The Cardinals will celebrate senior night the following day when it battles Eastern Michigan. Both matches start at 7 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ESPN3 in the WatchESPN app.
