Volleyball Falters in Five Against Central Michigan
October 27, 2017 | Women's Volleyball
MUNCIE, Ind. - - While the Ball State women's volleyball team received several strong individual performances, Central Michigan rallied from two sets down for a 3-2 (15-25, 16-25, 25-21, 25-17, 15-10) victory Friday night in Mid-American Conference action at Worthen Arena.
Defensively, it was another strong performance from sophomore libero Kate Avila (Yorktown, Ind./Yorktown) which stole the show for the Cardinals (14-10; 6-5 MAC). Avila finished the night by tying her career high with 36 digs, the only Ball State player in double figures, while recording a perfect reception percentage in 28 attempts.
Over the past six matches, Avila has been on fire in the Ball State backcourt, recording at least 20 digs each outing while averaging 6.68 digs per set. She has also been the Cardinals' best passer, with a perfect reception percentage in 136 attempts over the last seven matches. In all, Avila has raised her career digs total to 974 and is well on her way to becoming the third-fastest player in program history to reach 1,000 career digs.
Leading the Ball State offense Friday night against the Chippewas (12-11; 4-7 MAC) was junior outside attacker Brooklyn Goodsel (Corry, Pa./Corry Area) who tied for match-high honors with 16 kills. She also hit .310 (16-3-42) on the night, while collecting eight digs, two total blocks and a service ace.
Senior outside Jessica Lindsey (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) turned in her best match of the season, tying her career high with 12 kills while connecting at a .367 (12-1-30) pace. She also secured a season-high three digs and a solo block.
Rounding out Ball State's top contributors on offense was junior middle Emily Holland (Madison, Ind./Madison) with 11 kills and a .364 (11-3-22) attack percentage. Holland also collected a pair of solo blocks.
Speaking of strong play at the net, sophomore middle Sydnee VanBeek (St. John, Ind./Illiana Christian) led all players with a career-high nine blocks, while adding nine kills and tying a career high with five digs.
Despite the five-set loss, the Cardinals did manage to out-hit the Chippewas .253 (60-19-162) to .195 (59-25-174), aided by a .415 (27-5-53) rate of success over the opening two sets. Unfortunately, CMU turned up the offensive pressure after the long break, out-hitting the Cardinals in each of the final three sets.
Kalina Smith led a trio of Chippewas attackers in double figures with 16 kills, while Megan Kern led four CMU defenders in double digits with 23 digs.
The Ball State women's volleyball team will look to rebound tomorrow night, as it hosts Eastern Michigan in another 7 p.m. first serve at Worthen Arena. The match will also serve as senior night, with the Cardinals honoring Lindsey, Bailey Baumer (Batesville, Ind./Batesville), McCallen Kennedy (Boca Raton, Fla./North Broward Preparatory School) and student coach Sabrina Mangapora (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) following the conclusion of the match.
