Volleyball’s Offense Goes Cold in Loss at Ohio
October 14, 2017 | Women's Volleyball
ATHENS, Ohio - - While the Ball State women's volleyball team entered the weekend as the Mid-American Conference's top hitting team, the Cardinals were unable to find their offensive rhythm in a 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-18) loss to Ohio Saturday evening at the Convocation Center.
In suffering its fourth consecutive loss to the Bobcats (10-12; 4-4 MAC), the Cardinals (13-8; 5-3 MAC) were limited to a .156 (37-18-122) attack percentage for the match.
On defense, Ball State did manage to hold a 62 to 61 advantage in team digs, with sophomore libero Kate Avila (Yorktown, Ind./Yorktown) recording a team-high 20. It's the third consecutive match, and seventh time this season, Avila has logged at least 20 digs.
Senior defensive specialist Bailey Baumer (Batesville, Ind./Batesville) was the only other Ball State defender in double digits, collecting 10 digs. After seeing limited action much of the season, Baumer had a spectacular weekend playing in all seven sets and earning 21 digs for a 3.00 digs-per-set average. She entered the week having played in just 21 sets over the first 19 matches, tallying 16 digs.
Junior Emily Holland (Madison, Ind./Madison) led the Ball State offense with eight kills and a .389 (8-1-18) attack percentage, while three other Cardinals finished the match with seven kills apiece.
Despite being out-dug, the Ohio offense finished the night with a .278 (51-14-133) attack percentage, its best in MAC play, with three players smashing double-digit kills. Lizzie Stephens led the Bobcats with 19 kills, while Macy Reihing collected a match-best 27 digs.
The Ball State women's volleyball team will look to rebound Friday (Oct. 20), when it opens its final homestand of the 2017 season, a five-match match stint which starts with a 7 p.m. first serve versus Bowling Green. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app.
