Lucas Andersen Earns MAC Singles Player Of The Week Honors
January 25, 2017 | Men's Tennis
CLEVELAND, Ohio - Senior Lucas Andersen of the Ball State men's tennis team earned Mid-American Conference Singles Player of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday.
Andersen opened the 2017 spring season with a strong start at the No. 1 singles position. He ended the three-match weekend with a 2-1 ledger but could have easily went 3-0. On Friday, Andersen put up a good fight over the No. 27 player in the country, Notre Dame's Josh Hagar. After capturing the first set 6-4 from Hagar, he went on to nearly defeat Hagar in the second set but lost 7-6 (7-5). If just a few more games went his way he would have upset the Fighting Irish's top player but unfortunately dropped the third set, 10-3.
Andersen then pulled off a three-set thriller over nationally ranked No. 49 Gergely Madarasz of Purdue by a score of 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (7-2) on the top court in West Lafayette Saturday. On Sunday, Andersen finished the weekend with a straight set victory over Eastern Illinois' Freddie O'Brien in Muncie. Andersen won the first set over O'Brien, 7-5 and then only gave up a game in the second for the 6-1 win.
The Ball State men's tennis team continues spring action when it plays at Big Ten foe Indiana Friday at 6 p.m. in Bloomington.
