At the midpoint of the 2017 indoor season, the biggest story to date for the Cardinals has been the strong performances provided by underclassmen. Entering the weekend, Ball State's freshmen and sophomores hold nine top 10 rankings on the MAC Indoor Performance List.
Â
With a pair of impressive results last weekend, freshman distance runner Brooke Talhelm (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) currently sits atop the MAC rankings in the 800m run with a time of 2:15.46. Her effort as anchor of the all-freshman distance medley relay also has the Cardinals ranked as the top DMR in the league at 12:16.66.
Â
Freshman distance runner Peyton Kneadler (Monticello, Ind./Twin Lakes), another member of last weekend's top-ranking DMR, also holds down a top 10 spot in the 800m run at eighth (2:18.42).
Â
Freshmen sprinter Bryeana Byrdsong (Indianapolis, Ind./Warren Central) is the only Ball State student-athlete to rank in the top 10 in the MAC in a pair of individual events, holding down the No. 9 spot in both the 60m dash (7.71) and the 200m dash (25.21).
Â
After holding the top spot in the MAC in the 60m hurdles for over a month, freshman sprinter Jasmine Harris (Moreland Hills, Ohio/Orange) will look to recapture the league lead this weekend after falling to second with a time of 8.61.
Â
Moving up a class, sophomore Regan Lewis (Greenfield, Ind./Greenfield-Central) improved her league-leading hold in the high jump after clearing a career-best 1.76m (5'-9.25") at last weekend's Kentucky Invitational. The effort ties as the third-best individual performance in program history.
Â
Sophomores Peyton Stewart (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North) and Jazmin Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio/North College Hill) round out Ball State's student-athletes ranked in the top 10 on the MAC performance list by holding fourth in the 60m dash (7.64) and 60m hurdles (8.71), respectively.
