Goodsel’s Career-High 21 Kills Not Enough to Push Volleyball Past Toledo
September 29, 2016 | Women's Volleyball
MUNCIE, Ind. - - Despite a career-high 21 kills from sophomore right side Brooklyn Goodsel (Corry, Pa./Corry Area), the Ball State women's volleyball team ended its six-match home stand with a 3-1 (17-25, 25-23, 25-22, 25-18) loss to Toledo Thursday night in Worthen Arena.
"When you play a good team like Toledo, you have to have a sense of urgency and we didn't tonight," first-year head coach Kelli Miller said. "I don't know if we are getting complacent or we are expecting certain thing to happen, but I feel like we didn't play with much urgency after we won the first set."
The Cardinals (6-11 / 2-1 Mid-American Conference) jumped out of the gate strong, commanding play in the first set, including a .281 (15-6-32) to .061 (8-6-33) attacking advantage and a 17 to 10 edge in digs. Unfortunately, the Rockets (9-6 / 2-1 MAC) battled back to win the final three sets and take the match.
Goodsel provided a majority of the offensive highlights for the Cardinals, becoming just the third MAC player to post multiple 20-kill matches this season with her career-high 21 kills. She also served up an ace and hit .319 (21-6-47) on the night. On defense, Goodsel fell one dig shy of her fifth double-double of the season, while ranking second on the team with three total blocks.
"Brooklyn was our only good attacker tonight," Miller said. "So our offense was pretty simple to defend after the opening set. Brooklyn scored 21 kills and played just as well as she could have. Unfortunately, when you only have one good attacker, it allows the defense to double up on her and that's what Toledo did in sets three and four."
The only other Ball State attacker to finish the match with double-digit kills was sophomore Ellie Dunn (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) who logged 12. She also finished the match with four digs and a pair of block assists.
Freshman setter Amber Seaman (Carmel, Ind./Brebeuf) led the Ball State defense with 18 digs and also dished out 49 assists for her ninth double-double of the season. Freshman libero Kate Avila (Yorktown, Ind./Yorktown) continued her strong play in the backcourt by earning 15 digs.
The Ball State women's volleyball team returns to action Saturday when it travels to Buffalo for a 6 p.m. first serve in its first road MAC match of the season.
