Volleyball’s Offense Rolls in Sweep at Buffalo
October 01, 2016 | Women's Volleyball
BUFFALO, N.Y. - - The Ball State women's volleyball team opened the month of October with a bang, hitting a season-best .311 (54-17-119) to sweep host Buffalo Saturday night Alumni Arena.
In picking up the 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 27-25) victory, the Cardinals improved to 3-1 in Mid-American Conference action and to 7-11 on the year. Ball State has won seven of its last nine matches.
"We played three complete sets tonight from start to finish," first-year head coach Kelli Miller said. "Our offense was balanced and that allowed us to keep the Buffalo defense guessing. I was really pleased with how we passed tonight as well."
Sophomore right side Brooklyn Goodsel (Corry, Pa./Corry Area) continued her solid play against the Bulls (2-15; 1-3 MAC), leading all players with 16 kills in her seventh consecutive match in double figures. She also hit .353 (16-4-34), collected five digs and a pair of blocks.
After cruising through the first two sets, the Cardinals found themselves trailing 21-19 late in the third. However, a pair of markers from Goodsel helped the guests tie the score at 22. Ball State had the first chance to close the match, leading 24-23, but a service error kept the hosts alive.
With the score tied at 25, redshirt junior outside hitter Sabrina Mangapora (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) scored her 14th and final kill of the match to give the visitors from Muncie their third match point attempt at 26-25. After failing to convert on the previous two, Goodsel and sophomore middle hitter Emily Holland (Madison, Ind./Madison) threw up a wall to stuff the Buffalo attacker for a match-ending block.
Holland led the Ball State defense with three total blocks, adding a pair of solo stuffs to the match-winning block assist. She also scored five kills and hit .250 (5-2-12).
Freshman middle hitter Sydnee VanBeek (St. John, Ind./Illiana Christian) also turned in a solid performance for the Ball State offense, tying her career high with nine kills and hitting a career-best .471 (9-1-17). Sophomore outside hitter Ellie Dunn (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) rounded out Ball State's top attackers with eight kills.
On defense, freshman libero Kate Avila (Yorktown, Ind./Yorktown) led all players with 19 digs and was a perfect 18-for-18 in serve receive. Sophomore defensive specialist Lauren Schreiner (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North) also had a strong night in the backcourt, adding seven digs and successfully passing all 24 serves she face.
Freshman setter Amber Seaman (Carmel, Ind./Brebeuf) guided the Ball State offense to its best attack percentage of the season by dishing out 48 assists over the three sets and scoring two kills of her own. She also scored seven digs and served up one of the Cardinals' four aces.
The Ball State women's volleyball team returns to the road next weekend for matches at Northern Illinois (Friday, 7 p.m. CT) and Western Michigan (Saturday, 3 p.m.).
