Ball State Baseball Honored With ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State baseball team was one of 30 NCAA Division I teams to earn an inaugural American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Team Academic Excellence Award.
Over the last four years under head coach Rich Maloney, Ball State has produced three CoSIDA Academic All-Americans including a pair of first teamers this year – Alex Call and Caleb Stayton. Call, Stayton, BJ Butler and Sean Kennedy were also tabbed as Mid-American Conference Baseball Distinguished Scholar Athletes following the completion of the 2016 season. Meanwhile, Call and Ryan Spaulding completed their Ball State undergraduate degrees this spring.
The Cardinals won the MAC West Division title for the second time in the last three seasons in 2016 and finsihed with an overall record of 32-26. Four Ball State players were then selected in the 2016 Major League Baseball Draft – Call, Jarett Rindfleisch, Zach Plesac and Colin Brockhouse.
In order to qualify for the ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award, teams must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale during the 2015-16 academic year and the head coach must be a current ABCA member.
