Lumpkin Leads Track & Field on Opening Day of MAC Outdoor Championships
May 13, 2016 | Track & Field
MUNCIE, Ind. - - Senior Marie Lumpkin captured eighth place in the hammer throw Thursday to lead the Ball State track & field program on the opening day of the 2016 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships. The three-day event is being hosted by Toledo at the UT Outdoor Track & Field Facility.
With her mark of 54.05m in the hammer throw, Lumpkin scored in the event for the first time in her career, earning one point for the Cardinals. The effort was just shy of her career-best throw of 55.40m set in the 2016 season opener, which ranks her second in program history.
Lumpkin is no stranger to the pressure of the league meet, however, as she is a two-time scorer in the weight throw, placing eighth at both the 2015 and 2016 MAC Indoor Championships.
In addition to Lumpkin's effort, senior Michaela Hull placed 11th in the javelin with a distance of 37.60m. A four-time competitor in the javelin at the league outdoor meet, her 11th-place finish was three spots better than her previous best of 14th as a sophomore.
Hull concludes her career Saturday in the discus (10 a.m.), an event she is seeded 12th in at 45.05m. Her best league championship finish came in the discus, when she placed 12th her freshman campaign.
The Cardinals were supposed to end the day with sophomore Jessica Bryzek completing her first collegiate race at the 10,000m distance. However, six laps in, the race was canceled due to lightning. The race will be restarted at 8:30 a.m. Friday.
With one point on the day, the Cardinals currently stand in eighth place among the 12-team field. Kent State leads the event with 31 points, followed by Akron (27), Ohio (16), Central Michigan (15), Eastern Michigan (10), Miami (10), Bowling Green (7) and Ball State (1). Buffalo, Northern Illinois, Toledo and Western Michigan did not score on the opening day of the meet.
