April 30, 2016 | Women's Tennis
HAMILTON, Ohio - Freshman Isabelle Dohanics' three-set singles win on court six clinched a 4-3 victory for the top-seeded Ball State women's tennis team over fifth-seed Buffalo Saturday afternoon in the semifinal match of the 2016 Mid-American Conference Tournament at Riverside Athletic Club.
This makes only the second time in program history Ball State has made it to the MAC Tournament Championship match. Both appearances have been under current head coach Max Norris. The Cardinals competed against Miami last season in the final match but lost 4-0.
After losing on the road to Buffalo 4-3 in a matched played in Buffalo, NY, April 10, the Cardinals got off to a strong start in doubles play, after the No. 1 twosome of Peyton Gollhofer and Audrey Berger took down the Bulls Dayana Agaiseva and Laura Holterbosch, 6-0. But Buffalo answered quickly with a wins on courts three and two, respectively to clinch the doubles point.
Toni Ormond was the first off the court in singles play after a straight set victory over Margarita Kotok at the No. 4 singles position to knot the match at 1-1. Buffalo then went up 3-1 after posting wins on courts one and five.
With three courts still in play, Carmen Blanco would win 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 2 spot to make the score 3-2. Berger split sets on court three losing the first stanza 6-0 and then winning the second by the same score over Mercedes Losada. Berger found herself down 4-1 in the third but came back to win 7-5 evening the match, 3-3.
The match would then come down to No. 6 singles, where Dohanics was starting her third set over Sanjana Sudhir. Dohanics jumped out to an early lead and gave up only two games to Sudhir winning the match 6-2.
