Track & Field Battles Wind and Snow at Weather-Shortened Miami Duals
April 03, 2016 | Track & Field
OXFORD, Ohio - - Like the rest of the outdoor sports attempting to compete in the Midwest today, weather was not kind for the Ball State track & field team which turned in six top five finishes and a pair of career-best performances at the weather-shortened Miami Duals Saturday afternoon.
Despite the winds howling at 30 to 40 miles per hour for much of the competition, and snow moving in by the afternoon, the Cardinals battled early for three solid performances in the few field events which were completed.
Senior Marie Lumpkin started the meet strong with a third-place hammer throw of 54.64m. Junior Gabrielle Perryman followed with a career-best mark of 11.19m to place second in the triple jump, while freshman Regan Lewis tied for first place in the high jump by clearing 1.55m.
Junior sprinter Ariel Hune led the Cardinals on the track as weather conditions continued to deteriorate over the course of the afternoon, placing fourth in the 400m dash with a time of 1:01.32. Freshman Jazmin Smith also turned in a strong performance, turning in a time of 14.56 in the 100m hurdles to place fifth overall.
Rounding out the Cardinals' best performances was a third-place effort of 48.18 in the 4x100m relay by sophomore Anna-Kay West, freshman Peyton Stewart, freshman Amber McGee and senior Christina Crawford.
The Ball State track & field team will hope for vastly improved weather conditions the next time out, when it hosts the Ball Sate Challenge April 15-16 at University Track at the Briner Sports Complex. The weekend will also serve as Alumni Weekend for the Cardinals who will be hosting a variety of alumni events surrounding the competition.
