April 23, 2016 | Women's Tennis
MUNCIE, Ind. - For the first time in program history the Ball State women's tennis team won the Mid-American Conference regular season title with a 6-1 victory against Toledo at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center Saturday afternoon.
With the win, Ball State closed its regular season with a program best overall record of 20-3 and 7-1 in MAC play. The Cardinals third-year head coach Max Norris is the only head coach in program history to reach 20 wins.
"Today was a great day for Ball State," Norris said. "We had a lot of fans and it was a fun environment. Our team has been so unselfish this season and they've worked hard for something like this. As a program, this has been a long time coming. Obviously the previous players and the work from Christine Bresky got this program into the upper crest of the MAC. We're so proud to take another step forward and accomplish something like a regular season MAC Championship. We are excited for next weekend and thank you to all of our fans and support staff."
The doubles point continued to belong to the Cardinals as it has most of the season. Ball State took a 6-3 victory on court three after the twosome of Bethany Moore and Carmen Blanco defeated Toledo's Lauren Thai and Megan Miller. Peyton Gollhofer and Audrey Berger continued the Cardinals winning ways by clinching the doubles point with a 6-4 win over Colleen O'Brien and Mackenzie Bowman.
In singles action, Toni Ormond was quick off the court and Gollhofer finished soon after, both beating their respective opponents, 6-0, 6-3. Ormond defeated Miller at No. 4 singles and Gollhofer took down Huck on the top court. Blanco then captured the fourth point for the Cardinals after defeating O'Brien, 6-3, 6-3, at the No. 2 position to give Ball State its first MAC regular season title.
Berger and Sbircea rounded out the victories for Ball State with three set thrillers on their respective courts.
The Ball State women's tennis team will now compete at the Mid-American Conference Tournament as the No. 1 seed. The tournament begins April 29-May 1 at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.
