April 20, 2016 | Football
MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State football team announced today that former Cardinals Jeff Hammond (1986-89) and Mark Parris (1989-92) will serve as the honorary captains at Saturday's Spring Football Game.
Hammond, a flanker originally from Bolingbrook, Illinois, helped the Cardinals win the 1989 MAC championship and earn a spot in the California Raisin Bowl. As a senior, Hammond finished with 11 catches for 195 yards and two touchdowns. He played in all but one game his final three years on the team.
Parris twice earned All-MAC accolades at linebacker (1991, '92) and was a finalist for the MAC Vern Smith Award (MVP) as a junior. His 178 tackles as a senior in 1992 still ranks fifth on Ball State's single-season chart. The Lawrenceburg, Indiana, native recorded a career-high 22 tackles in the 1991 season opener at Miami.
The 2016 Cardinals are scheduled to hold their annual Spring Game this Saturday, April 23 at 3 p.m. The players are scheduled to begin warm-ups on the field at 2:15 p.m. This year's format will have the offense take on the defense in a four-quarter game with a running clock.
Admission to the Spring Game is free. Ball State Athletics will give away an early edition of the 2016 football poster to all fans. Fans can check out potential season ticket locations and purchase on site. Current season ticket holders are encouraged to renew their tickets for the 2016 season as well.
Ball State is under the direction of first year coach and former Cardinal, Mike Neu. The Cardinals are poised to return six starters on offense and nine on defense this fall. The Cardinals kick off their 2016 season the first weekend in September with a trip to Georgia State. Ball State's home opener is set for Saturday, Sept. 17 against Eastern Kentucky.
