Women's Tennis Wins 4-3 Thriller Over Miami Friday

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State women's tennis team defeated the Miami RedHawks 4-3 Friday at the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center. The Cardinals improve to 16-2 and 3-0 in the Mid-American Conference, while Miami falls to 5-9 overall and 0-1 in league action.
With the win, the Cardinals defeat Miami for only the third time in program history. The last time Ball State defeated the RedHawks was in 2012-13 by a score of 4-3 under former head coach Christine Bader. Ball State also extends its win streak to 13 and is two wins shy of from breaking the program record which is 17.
Ball State got off to a quick start in doubles play, with a win on court three. The Cardinals twosome of Peyton Gollhofer and Audrey Berger pulled off the 6-1 defeat over the RedHawks Ana Rajkovic and Hannah Shteyn. The Redhawks evened doubles play, after Miami defeated the Cardinals No. 1 doubles team of Toni Ormond and Julia Sbircea by a score of 6-2. Miami then clinched the doubles point behind the No. 2 duo of Andreea Badileanu and Anzhelika Shapovalova.
The Cardinals rallied back rather quickly with straight set victories at the No. 2 and 4 singles positions. Gollhofer claimed a 6-2, 6-1 win over Miami's Shteyn which was followed by Ormond's 7-6 (4), 6-4 defeat over Andreea Badileanu. Miami knotted the match 2-2 with a three set take down over Ball State's Berger on court three. But Dohanics answered back by beating Anastasiia Vasiukhina, 6-3, 7-6 (5), at position six.
After that, Carmen Blanco dropped her first set to Shapovalova, 6-3. Blanco then clinched the win on the top court for Ball State with her come from behind thriller. She took sets two and three from Shapovalova by a score of 7-5, 6-3 for the victory.
The Ball State women's tennis team continues Mid-American Conference action, Sunday at Eastern Michigan beginning at 1 p.m. in Ypsilanti, Mich.
