
Sbircea's Clutch Win Lifts Tennis Past Cincinnati

MUNCIE, Ind. - Sophomore Julia Sbircea clinched the Cardinals come from behind 4-3 win against Cincinnati Friday night in the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center.
"Cincinnati is well coached and they compete so hard," Ball State women's tennis coach Max Norris said. "So whether we won or lost I was proud of how we fought our way back. Going forward this was a great win for our team as everyone played a big part. We are excited to head down to Orlando. Go cards!"
Ball State fell behind early to Cincinnati after the Bearcats took the doubles point from the Cardinals. Carmen Blanco and Rosalinda Calderon were the first Ball State twosome off the court after losing a 6-2 decision to Cincinnati's Lauren Bellinger and Ali Miller at the No. 1 position. But Toni Ormond and Julia Sbircea evened the doubles competition on court two with their 6-2 defeat over Harley Hutchinson and Samantha Perry. The Bearcats would then take the point from the Cardinals after posting a 6-3 victory over Audrey Berger and Peyton Gollhofer at the No. 3 position.
After winning the doubles point, Cincinnati jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a quick 6-4, 6-2 victory over Peyton Gollhofer on the top court. Blanco then made it a 2-1 match with her straight set win over Antonella Bramato at No. 3 singles. The Bearcats then took the next point to go up 3-1, after Hutchinson took down Dohanics on court five 6-1, 6-4.
After that, Ball State began to fight back with wins on courts four, two and six. Ormond made it a 2-3 competition with her 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 victory over Katya Bure. Berger followed with a three set thriller of her own against Bellinger, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. The outcome of the match would come down to the last competition. Sbircea fell behind early 4-6 to Hannah Wille on court six. She then took the next two stanza's 6-2, 6-3 to seal the victory for the Cardinals.
The Ball State women's tennis team continues its 2016 spring season when it plays South Dakota in Orlando, Fla. March 8.
