Women's Tennis Opens MAC Play With 4-3 Win Over WMU

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State women's tennis team opened Mid-American Conference action with a 4-3 win over Western Michigan (11-6, 0-1 MAC) Friday afternoon at the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center. With the win, the Cardinals (14-2, 1-0 MAC) have extended their win streak to 11.
Ball State continues to dominate in doubles play, taking the doubles point from its fourth straight opponent in the Cardinals last four matches. Bethany Moore alongside partner Carmen Blanco defeated Western Michigan's Meika Ashby and Denise Azcui, 6-2, on court three. At No. 2 doubles, Peyton Gollhofer and Audrey Berger clinched the doubles point for Ball State after their 6-4 win over the Broncos' Barbare Eristavi and Katja Fevralev. Western Michigan was up on the top court 5-3 before the match went unfinished.
In singles action, Western Michigan evened the score quickly winning in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, at six singles over Ball State's Julia Sbircea. Ball State took back the lead as Carmen Blanco topped Olivia Myers 0-6, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. The Broncos drew even with Eristavi's, 7-6 (4), 6-3, victory against Dohanics at the No. 5 position. After that, the Broncos took a 3-2 advantage with Tracy Kuhle's straight set defeat over Berger on court three. But Ball State would keep fighting, as Toni Ormond rallied after falling behind 7-5 against Fevralev at the No. 4 spot, she came back to take sets two and three, 6-4, 6-4 for the win.
With the match tied, Gollhofer took the first set from Melina Lyubomirova on the top court 7-6 (4). She then dropped the second set 3-6 but would come back to take set three from Lyubomirovaby, 7-5 which would clinch the match for Ball State. With the win, Gollhofer improves to 11-2 in dual action this season.
The Ball State women's tennis team continues Mid-American Conference action Sunday at home against Northern Illinois at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center, weather permitting. First serve is at 1 p.m.
