Game Notes
Opening Pitch: Ball State is set to play its first home games of the season this weekend against Dayton. The Cardinals have won three straight home openers, including a 4-0 win over Miami last year. In that game, C Jarett Rindfleisch hit a solo home run and drove in three RBIs.
Series History: This is the third consecutive year and fourth time in the past five seasons that these two teams have met on the diamond.
Ball State swept a three-game series at Dayton last year. In that series, RF Alex Call hit .385, homered once, drove in six runs and scored seven times. RHP Brendan Burns won game three thanks to tossing six innings, striking out five batters, giving up five hits and one run.
The Cardinals lead the all-time series by a count of 23-9.
Spring Break Wrap Up: Ball State went 5-4 on its recent Spring Break trip which included games against three nationally ranked teams – No. 13 Ole Miss, No. 18 Coastal Carolina and No. 6 LSU.
The Cardinals defeated LSU on March 11, marking the fourth consecutive year Ball State has defeated a nationally ranked team. Ball State hit four home runs and LHP Kevin Marnon limited the Tigers to one run in 5.2 innings in that win.
Five starters hit .300 or better during the Spring Break travels, led by C Jarett Rindfleisch, who hit .345 (10-of-29) with two home runs, four RBIs, seven runs scored and six walks.
Spring Break Wrap Up, Part 2: Ball State put together a few season highs on its 10-day road trip. The Cardinals tallied a season-best 14 hits at LSU on March 13, four home runs at LSU on March 11 and 14 walks at Savannah State on March 9. The pitchers piled up a season-high 14 strikeouts at Savannah State on March 8.
Among the Best in the MAC: Ball State's pitching enters the weekend ranked third in the MAC in ERA (4.66) and first in strikeouts (123). The Cardinals' batting is fifth in batting average (.268) and first in triples (seven).
