MUNCIE, Ind. – The Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association named No. 8 Ball State (13-3, 7-0 MIVA) men's volleyball sophomore Matt Walsh Defensive Player of the Week, announced Tuesday.
Last weekend, the Cardinals swept both Quincy and Lindenwood in a pair of 3-0 MIVA finals in which Walsh posted a total of 17 blocks, as well as nine kills. Walsh led the Cardinals to a significant 13.0-2.0 advantage in blocks as he downed seven Quincy attacks in the third set for a total of 10 on the night.
The Chicago, Ill. native followed up his season-high of 10 blocks with a seven block performance against Lindenwood. Walsh helped push the Lions to commit 34 attacking errors and hit a -.115 attack percentage, while the sophomore middle attack earned a .429 attack percentage and four kills himself. Ball State ultimately tallied a 10.5-3.0 advantage in total team blocks over the course of the three-setter.
Walsh is currently fourth in the MIVA with 1.11 blocks per set, while his efforts helped Ball State extend its win streak to 10 in a row, paired with earning an undefeated 7-0 record in conference action.
Looking ahead, the Cardinals will continue MIVA play when it travels to Phoenix, Ariz. to take on Grand Canyon on March 4 and 5, followed by facing No. 4 UCLA in non-conference action on March 7.
