KALAMAZOO, Mich.—The Ball State gymnastics team suffered a narrow loss of 194.800 – 194.675 against Western Michigan Saturday evening in the Broncos' University Arena. Western Michigan advances to 4-1 on the season and 2-1 in MAC play. Ball State finishes the meet 3-5 overall and 0-3 in MAC play.
"I am very pleased to have a season high score on bars," head coach Joanna Saleem stated. "It was a great way to start off the meet. We built some momentum and kept the competition close throughout the entire meet. I'm excited about another season high team score. It's great to see that we are continuing to get better each week. The first routine of the meet started us off in the right direction. We had a solid performance on vault and floor as well."
The Cardinals scored a team season high of 194.675. The team managed a season event high on bars (48.875). On vault they put up an event score of (48.575), beam (48.450) and on floor (48.775).
The Cardinals started the meet on bars where Kayla Beckler scored a 9.825 career high landing her in first place. Jordyn Penny followed in third place with a score of 9.800. Angela Durkac and Katie Honarmand both scored season high scores both scoring a 9.775.
On vault the Cardinals had a three-way tie for fourth place. Jala Washington, Erin Patchey, and Jordyn Penny all scored a 9.725.
The Cardinals carried their momentum to the floor where Denasiha Christian took the floor title scoring a 9.850. Christian has placed first on floor in four of this season's competitions so far. Clare Collins and Erin Patchey stood in fifth with scores of 9.750.
The team concluded the meet on beam. Beckler scored a 9.775 placing second. Baylee Bell followed in fifth place with a score of 9.750.
"Denasiha Christian had another great floor routine for the win. Kayla Beckler had a great meet today...first on bars and second on beam," Saleem said. "We have some things we need to work on in the gym before we compete again next week. You can see the spark in this team, they are excited about their performances but we are hungry to come out on top. Losing by such a narrow margin in the past couple of meet has only added fuel to that spark."
The Cardinals return home to Worthen Arena to host their annual Think Pink meet, supporting breast cancer awareness. The quad meet against Kentucky, Kent State, and Lindenwood, is Sunday, February 14 at 1 p.m. E.T.
