Stewart Leads Track & Field on Second Day of GVSU Big Meet
February 14, 2016 | Track & Field
ALLENDALE, Mich. - - Led by another strong performance from freshman sprinter Peyton Stewart (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North), who won the 60m dash with a career-fast time of 7.58, the Ball State indoor track & field team earned seven career-best performances on the final day of the Grand Valley State University Big Meet at the Kelly Family Sports Center.
Stewart also placed eighth in the 200m dash with a career-fast time of 25.53 to finish the day with two of the Cardinals 10 top 10 individual finishes.
“Our goal every meet is to compete to the best of our abilities on that given day and walk away with something to be proud of that proves we are moving forward,” first-year head coach Brian Etelman said. “We accomplished that at Grand Valley, particularly with Peyton Stewart's performance in the 60 meters. She had a breakthrough in running under 7.60 for the first time and it sky-rocketed her confidence as we move closer to the MAC Championship.”
Stewart was not the only Ball State student-athlete who gained a boost of confidence from their performance heading into this coming Friday's regular season finale, the Ball State Tune-Up, which will be held in the Field Sports Building starting at 4 p.m.
Junior Gabrielle Perryman (Beachwood, Ohio/Beachwood) placed second in the triple jump with a career-best distance of 11.35m (37-3), while sophomore Gabby Sims (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North) sliced a second-and-a-half off her previous career-best in the 400m dash to place 10th overall with a time of 57.98 which is the fastest for a Ball State sprinter this season.
In addition, freshman Regan Lewis (Greenfield, Ind./Greenfield-Central) turned in another strong showing in the high jump, placing second overall by clearing the bar at 1.66m (5-5.25) in her second attempt.
“Gabrielle Perryman, Gabby Sims, Ariel Hune and Emma Manchess all ran PRs today and walk away from the meet better than they have ever been,” Etelman added. “We look forward to hosting our next meet and closing out the regular season on our own campus before moving on to the MAC Championships in two weeks' time.”
