October 07, 2016 | Women's Volleyball
DeKALB, Ill. - - The Ball State women's volleyball team could not get past a hot Northern Illinois squad, suffering a 3-0 (25-13, 25-21, 25-11) setback to the Mid-American Conference West Division leader Friday night at Victor E. Court.
While the Cardinals (7-12, 3-2 MAC) had won seven of their last nine matches entering Friday's contest, the Huskies (13-4, 5-0 MAC) were able to extend their winning streak to eight matches with another dominating performance in picking up its third consecutive sweep.
After a rough start which saw Ball State drop the opening set 25-13, the Cardinals took an early 17-12 lead in the second stanza. Unfortunately, NIU scored nine of the next 10 points and rallied to win the frame 25-21. The Huskies continued their strong play in the third, winning 25-11.
Freshman middle hitter Sydnee VanBeek (St. John, Ind./Illiana Christian) was Ball State's top attacker in the match, smashing seven kills and hitting .417 (7-2-12). She also led the Cardinals' defense with three total blocks.
Redshirt junior outside hitter Sabrina Mangapora (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) paced the Ball State attack with eight kills, while, sophomore outside hitter Ellie Dunn (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) scored seven.
On defense, freshman libero Kate Avila (Yorktown, Ind./Yorktown) collected a team-high 10 digs, while freshman setter Amber Seaman (Carmel, Ind./Brebeuf) added seven. Seaman also dished out 25 assists, scored four kills and hit .500 (4-1-6) for the match.
The Ball State women's volleyball team closes its current three-match road swing Saturday with a scheduled 3 p.m. first serve at Western Michigan.
