Devoe Helps Volleyball Rally Past Eastern Michigan in Friday Matinee
October 28, 2016 | Women's Volleyball
YPSILANTI, Mich. - - Led by a strong performance from redshirt sophomore middle Avery Devoe (Canton, Mass./Canton), the Ball State women's volleyball team rallied for a 3-1 (21-25, 25-18, 25-22, 25-19) victory over Eastern Michigan in Mid-American Conference play Friday afternoon at the EMU Convocation Center.
Â
With the win, the Cardinals (10-15; 6-5 MAC) moved one step closer to securing a berth in the 2016 MAC Tournament by collecting an all-important sixth league victory. Since the tournament moved to an eight-team format in 2011, 40 of the 42 teams which have secured at least six MAC wins have advanced to the league's premier event, with the only non-qualifiers losing three-team tiebreakers at 6-10.
Â
Early Friday afternoon, it was the Eagles (8-16; 3-8 MAC) who looked poised to even the 2016 regular season series with Ball State as they jumped out to a 17-8 advantage in the opening set. However, the Cardinals managed to battle back, aided by a pair of kills and a couple of blocks from Devoe, to cut the lead to 24-21.
Â
While EMU ultimately won the set on the next point, Ball State carried the momentum the rest of the afternoon winning the next three sets to pick up its second straight victory over Eastern Michigan.
Â
Devoe led the charge for the Cardinals, finishing the day with 10 kills and a .368 (10-3-19) attack percentage. It marks just the second time Devoe has scored double-digit kills in her career, with the other coming in a career-high 11 kill outburst versus Ohio (Oct. 15).
Â
Devoe also turned in a dominating performance at the net in Friday's win at EMU, collecting a match-high six total blocks (two solo and four assists). Her play at the net helped the Cardinals score 13.0 total blocks, which is the team's best blocking effort in MAC play this season.
Â
Redshirt junior outside hitter Sabrina Mangapora (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) was the only other Ball State player to log double-figure kills Friday, tying Devoe for team-high honors with 10. She also scored three total blocks and hit .222 (10-2-36).
Â
After a slow offensive start, the Cardinals found their rhythm behind junior setter McCallen Kennedy (Boca Raton, Fla./North Broward Preparatory School) who entered the match late in the opening set. In her third strong effort in MAC play, Kennedy dished out 33 assists and helped Ball State finish the day hitting .203 (43-16-133). Kennedy also scored three kills and turned in a strong effort at the net with a career-high four block assists.
Â
In the backcourt, freshman libero Kate Avila (Yorktown, Ind./Yorktown) led the Ball State defense with 13 digs and logged a .952 reception percentage, successfully passing 20 of the 21 serves she faced. She was the only Ball State defender to collect double-digit digs against the Eagles.
Â
Rounding out Ball State's top contributors were sophomore right side Brooklyn Goodsel (Corry, Pa./Corry Area) with six kills and nine digs, sophomore outside attacker Ellie Dunn (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) with eight kills and three blocks and freshman middle Sydnee VanBeek (St. John, Ind. / Illiana Christian) with six kills and five block assists.
Â
The Ball State women's volleyball team returns to action Saturday, when it travels to Central Michigan for another 7 p.m. first serve.
