Volleyball Falls in Straight Sets at MAC-Leading Miami
October 22, 2016 | Women's Volleyball
OXFORD, Ohio - - The Ball State women's volleyball team could not get past the league's hottest team Saturday afternoon, suffering a 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 26-24) setback at Mid-American Conference leading Miami.
One night after sweeping Bowling Green with its second-best attacking effort of the season, the Cardinals (9-1; 5-5 MAC) could not find their offensive rhythm against a RedHawks (18-4; 10-0 MAC) squad which ran its current winning streak to a league-best 17 matches.
Sophomore right side Brooklyn Goodsel (Corry, Pa./Corry Area) was the only Ball State attacker to reach double-figure kills Saturday with 10. She also hit a team-best .348 (10-2-23) and finished two digs shy of her eighth double-double of the season with eight.
Rounding out Ball State's top attackers in the match were redshirt junior outside hitter Sabrina Mangapora (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) with six kills and freshman middle Sydnee VanBeek (St. John, Ind. / Illiana Christian) with five. Overall, the Ball State offense was limited to a .111 (34-22-108) attack percentage, while host Miami connected at a .317 (44-11-104) clip.
In the backcourt, freshman libero Kate Avila (Yorktown, Ind./Yorktown) earned a team-high 14 digs and successfully passed all of the match-high 27 serves she faced.
Junior setter McCallen Kennedy (Boca Raton, Fla./North Broward Preparatory School) also tallied double-digit digs with 10 and added 25 assists for her second career double-double. She also notched the first three kills of her career against the RedHawks.
The Ball State women's volleyball team continues its five match road swing Friday, with a scheduled Noon first serve at Eastern Michigan.
