January 09, 2016 | Women's Swimming and Diving
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Ball State women's swimming and diving team fell in double-dual action Friday evening to Xavier and host IUPUI. The Cardinals marked 135 points to Xavier's 159, and fell in a narrow 148.5-150.5 final to the Jaguars.
Overall, the Cardinals captured five event victories, including a pair from junior Jessica Extine, who took top honors in both the 50 free (24.43) and the 100 free (53.81). Extine also led the Cardinals in a first place finish in the 400 free relay (3:36.92) and second place finish in the 200 medley relay (1:47.95) against Xavier. The same relays finished second and third, respectively, to IUPUI.
Extine's relay teammate, sophomore Amanda Kedzierski, topped the 100 breaststroke by touching the wall in 1:06.28 just before IUPUI's Mary Klueh (1:07.46). The effort was also good enough to top Xavier, giving Kedzierski two event victories in one swim.
Junior Katie Horn marked back-to-back Ball State event wins when she touched the wall in 2:08.66 for a first place finish in the 200 butterfly, just after Kedzierski's show in the 100 breast.
Rounding out the top swim finishes on the day for the Cardinals was sophomore Andrea Richter, posting a 58.39 final in the 100 fly. The time was narrowly trailed by Horn's 58.88 effort for second.
Senior Madie Zirzow kept it rolling in diving action when she topped the one-meter competition against both opponents, with a score of 258.83. Zirzow also marked a score of 238.28 in three-meter competition.
The Ball State women's swimming and diving team picks up conference action again on Saturday, Jan. 23 when it welcomes Toledo to the Lewellen Aquatic Center. The event is slated for a 1 p.m. start and will feature Senior Day festivities and recognition, as the meet is the final home event of the season for the Cardinals.
