Men?s Volleyball Sweeps NJIT On The Road

NEWARK, N.J. -- The No. 15 Ball State (4-3) men's volleyball team downed NJIT (0-4) in a quick three sets on Friday evening in the midst of its six-match road stretch. In the 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-15) victory, the Cardinals posted a .367 team attack percentage to the Highlanders .138.
The team attack percentage was raised by senior setter Hiago Garchet, who marked a perfect 1.000 paired with one kill on the night, while junior Edgardo Cartagena met the same perfect percentage in addition to earning one kill.
The offensive line was led by senior Marcin Niemczewski, who topped the Cardinals with seven kills and two of the Cardinals six service aces. Sophomore Mitch Weiler tallied six kills and a block assist, while Brendan Surane, Matt Walsh, and Alex Pia each tackled additional attacks and marked four kills a piece.
Other standouts included junior Mike Scannell, who earned two service aces and four kills against the Highlanders, while Walsh earned the lone solo block of the evening from the Cardinals. Garchet assisted in the offensive attack of Ball State by marking 23 assists, while Niemczewski assisted in the Ball State defense by taking on six digs throughout the night.
After battling through 23 tie scores and seven lead changes, Ball State ultimately topped NJIT in attack percentage (.367-.138), aces (6-1), digs (20-16) and took advantage of NJIT's 22 attack errors, although the Highlanders tallied more kills (33-31), assists (29-28) and total team blocks (6.5-3.0) in its home arena of Fleisher Center.
The Cardinals will round out the weekend by facing George Mason tomorrow evening in Fairfax, Va. prior to opening Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association play next Thursday at McKendree.
