Women's Swim & Dive Looks For Victory Over Toledo
January 20, 2016 | Women's Swimming and Diving
MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State women's swimming and diving program will hold its final home event of the season Saturday, Jan. 23 in the Lewellen Aquatic Center when it welcomes Mid-American Conference opponent Toledo. Senior day recognition of Madie Zirzow and Sydney Harris will begin prior to the meet at 12:45 p.m.
Most recently, the Cardinals fell in double-dual action to Xavier and host IUPUI. The Cardinals marked 135 points to Xavier's 159, and fell in a narrow 148.5-150.5 final to the Jaguars.
Overall, the Cardinals captured five event victories in last Friday's matchup, including a pair from junior Jessica Extine, who took top honors in both the 50 free (24.43) and the 100 free (53.81). Another standout performance included sophomore Amanda Kedzierski, who topped the 100 breaststroke by touching the wall in 1:06.28, and the effort was also good enough to top Xavier, giving Kedzierski two event victories in one swim. Junior Katie Horn helped mark back-to-back Ball State event wins when she touched the wall in 2:08.66 for a first place finish in the 200 butterfly, just after Kedzierski's show in the 100 breast. Zirzow was also able to clinch first place over both opponents in one-meter diving action with a score of 258.83.
Earlier this season, the Cardinals faced the Rockets in double-dual action at Akron, and Toledo topped Ball State 195-105. Kedzierski had led the Cardinals by posting two individual, and four overall top-five finishes. Kedzierski earned the highest finish for Ball State when she was second to touch the wall in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.33), which was then followed by a fifth place finish in the 200 breast (2:26.96).
Since the Rockets regular season opener with the Cardinals, Toledo has gone 2-4 overall as well as 1-2 in Mid-American Conference action. Most recently, Toledo fell to Oakland at home 170-118. Prior to the loss, the Rockets took on the Miami Invitational, just as the Ball State swimmers did, and finished third overall with 1571 points, while host Miami won the event with 2240.5 points. In addition to posting 12 top-ten finishes on the day, Toledo notched two second place finishes in the three day event.
Looking ahead, the Ball State women's swimming and diving team will round out team regular season action when it travels to Athens, Ohio on Jan. 30 to take on MAC foe Ohio. The event will kick off at 1 p.m.
