All-Access: Cardinal Flashback (Toledo 1993)
September 30, 2015 | Football
This Saturday Ball State football welcomes Toledo to Muncie for the annual Homecoming game. But this certainly isn't the first time the Rockets have come to town for such an affair. Ball State All-Access takes a look back at the 1993 Homecoming matchup that still holds several places in the record books to this day.
The 1993 season proved to be a championship one for the Cardinals, but one of the team's earliest league tests came against Toledo, October 9th. The Rockets, 2-2 at the time, scored on five of their first eight drives and jumped out to a 30-3 lead. Things were going so well, Toledo even fumbled a handoff...for a touchdown early in the third quarter. All the Rockets' other touchdowns came on what you'd call 'explosive plays.'
But Ball State wouldn't be denied on that drizzling day. The Cards put up 28 unanswered points, scoring their final touchdown with no time left, to rally for a 31-30 win. The comeback still stands as the greatest in program history.
Quarterback Mike Neu led the charge, throwing for a record 469 yards, a record 297 of it to Brian Oliver. The tandem's longest connection was a 98-yard pass play in the fourth quarter. That too was then, and still is now, a school record.
Ball State and Toledo meet again Saturday at 3pm inside Scheumann Statium. Tickets are available at 888-BSU-Ticket or BallStateSports.com. For more information, follow the Cards on twitter @BallStateSports or @BallStateFB.
