Football Kicks Off Preseason Camp Wednesday Night
August 06, 2015 | Football
MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State football team held its first practice of the 2015 fall season on a beautiful Wednesday evening at Scheumann Stadium. All 105 student-athletes who reported to camp participated in drills on day one. Below are more news and notes from the opening practice …
TURF FEELS DIFFERENT: The field turf at Scheumann Stadium, which was replaced earlier this summer, saw its first action. Head coach Pete Lembo really liked the feel of the new turf and believes the players will be very thankful for the updated turf after a week or two of practices.
CHECKMARK NEXT TO CONDITIONING: Because the team has to go through the first couple of practices in helmets only, there are some limitations on what the coaches can do with the student-athletes. Coach Lembo noted that he keeps an eye on conditioning early in the camp schedule and was overall impressed with what he saw out of the team tonight.
SCRIMMAGES SET: The Cardinals will hold four scrimmages during preseason camp – Friday, Aug. 14 (7:15 p.m.), Tuesday, Aug. 18 (7:15 p.m.), Saturday, Aug. 22 (2:15 p.m.) and Friday, Aug. 28 (7:15 p.m.).
LATE ADDITION TO TEAM: The final player to join the team for preseason camp is Kyle Lewis. Hailing from Bellflower, Calif., the junior safety played football at West Los Angeles College last fall. As a high school competitor, Lewis piled up 1,200 rushing yards and three interceptions on the way to earning first team All-CIF honors.
QUOTING COACH LEMBO: “The guys were fired up tonight and maybe we need to tone it down just a bit. However, I liked the coaching that I saw from the veterans as well as the focus from all of the new players. I'm anxious to see what we can do in the next few weeks.”
