MUNCIE, Ind. – The daily grind of preseason camp took a bit of a twist Thursday as ESPN visited the Ball State football team. Even with the buzz, the Cardinals still strapped on the gear for an afternoon practice. Some more news and notes from preseason camp practice nine are below …
THE WORLDWIDE LEADER IN SPORTS: Members of ESPN were on campus Thursday morning to shoot interviews for a feature on the 'Hulk Smash' video, which aired earlier in the summer. ESPN's feature is expected to air on the season-opening College Game Day show on Saturday morning, Sept. 5. If you missed the 'Hulk Smash' video, click here to watch.
JUST THREE WEEKS AWAY: The football season opener is only three weeks away. There are many ticket options available for Cardinal fans from season tickets to mini-plans and single-game options. A SPECIAL VISIT: Longtime football coach John Gutekunst is visiting the Ball State football camp for a couple of days, observing and offering his thoughts to the football staff. Gutekunst coached in the collegiate ranks for more than 40 years with stops at North Carolina, South Carolina, Wake Forest and Rutgers. He was the head coach at Minnesota from 1985-91. Gutekunst played defensive back at Duke from 1963-66 and started coaching with the Blue Devils in 1967.
WINNER, WINNER, STEAK DINNER: Team 'Strollo' celebrated a victory in the Spring Team Challenge Thursday night with a steak dinner at the dining hall. Earlier in the spring, the entire team was split up into small groups via a player 'draft.' All of the smaller groups then competed in areas of academics and community service. Team 'Strollo', featuring team captain Jacob Richard, along with Aaron Taylor, Sam Brunner, Payton Stonefield, Aaron Hepp, Fred Schroeder, Stu Stanley, Alex Egan, Keenan Noel, Darren Bost, Rontrell Peyton, Jacob White and David Moore compiled the top overall marks.
FAN JAM: The annual fan favorite is two days away. Fan Jam features football skills stations for fall sports, poster giveaways, autographs, cheerleaders, Code Red dancers, Charlie Cardinal and free food from corporate partners. Fans can also check out the new playing surface and take a walk around the locker room and meet student-athletes and coaches from a variety of sports. Fan Jam will be held at Scheumann Stadium this Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m.
