Schifferdecker Named MAC Scholar Athlete Of The Week

MUNCIE, Ind. - - After three solid outings in the circle last weekend, Ball State softball junior pitcher Kelsey Schifferdecker (Belton, Mo./Belton) has been named the Mid-American Conference Female Scholar Athlete of the Week for the week of April 20-27.
Schifferdecker, who earned the honor for the first time this season and the second time in her career, continued her inspirational comeback story by picking up two more league victories and logging a 1.91 earned-run average over three appearances in the circle last weekend.
Schifferdecker, who was hit by a liner in her first appearance of the season, missed two months of the season for surgery and recovery, before returning to the circle April 7 versus Eastern Illinois.
Last week, Schifferdecker was able to guide the Cardinals to a 4-1 victory at Ohio (April 24) in her first start of the season, limiting the defending MAC Tournament Champion Bobcats to just six hits and one run over a season-long 7.0 innings of work.
She followed by earning the win in relief in the Saturday's game at Akron (April 25), limiting the Zips' offense to just three hits and a walk over the final 3.1 innings.
Schifferdecker closed the week with a no decision in her second start of the year at Akron (April 26), throwing 4.1 innings and allowing just five hits and three runs in a game which the Cardinals won 5-3.
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during the week's competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
Schifferdecker and the Ball State softball team conclude the regular season this weekend, with a two-game series at Miami. The Cardinals and RedHawks are set to play single games Saturday (2 p.m.) and Sunday (1 p.m.).
