Football Names Spring Game Honorary Coaches
April 08, 2015 | Football
Ball State football head coach Pete Lembo has named former letterwinners Tom Broderick and Kurt Humes as honorary coaches for the annual Spring Game Saturday, April 18 in Scheumann Stadium.
“We have made an effort to introduce some new football program traditions since arriving four years ago,” Lembo said. “One of these is to honor two former players or coaches by having them on the sideline with the team for the Spring Game. Tom and Kurt represent a highly successful era of Ball State football in the mid to late 1970's. They are also great examples of football alumni who have stayed connected with the program and give back to the university. We are trying to build a culture of dedication, appreciation, entrepreneurship and philanthropy with our football student-athletes. Tom and Kurt are great role models for our current players to learn from and keep in touch with in the future.”
Broderick, who lettered in football for the Cardinals from 1976-79, lives in Cincinnati, Ohio, and is president of Broderick & Associates. In 1998, he started his company, which specializes in the marketing and sales of engineered components for heavy industry. The company also assists in the design and production startup of new products for various original equipment manufacturers in North America. He and his wife, the former Nicole Dunn, are involved with various local charities. Broderick was a member of Ball State's 1976 and 1978 Mid-American Conference Championships for coaches Dave McClain and Dwight Wallace, respectively.
Humes lettered in football for the Cardinals from 1973-75 and was a part of Ball State's first-ever MAC team in 1975 for Coach McClain. He is the major account manager in the Midwest for Waste Management Recycling Services. Humes is responsible for marketing all non-fiber recycling materials that Waste Management produces out of its Midwest facilities. He and his wife, the former Pam Larkey, a former Ball State cheerleader, live in LaGrange County in northeast Indiana.
Ball State will finish its spring practice with the annual Spring Game in preparation for the 2015 season, which opens Thursday, Sept. 3 vs. VMI in Scheumann Stadium. Ball State will be home for four Saturday's in October and finish the regular season with a Tuesday game at home the week of Thanksgiving.

Lembo, who enters his fifth season as Ball State's head coach, has guided the program to a 30-20 overall record, a 21-11 mark in the Mid-American Conference and a pair of bowl appearances. The 30 victories are the most by any Ball State head coach in the first four years of his coaching career in Muncie and Lembo's .600 win percentage is second best to start a career in program history.
