T&F Wins Seven Events At Cardinal Invitational
April 18, 2015 | Track & Field
MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State outdoor track & field team turned in a strong all-around effort Friday, picking up seven total event victories in the fourth-annual Cardinal Invitational at University Track in the Briner Sports Complex.
Senior multi-event specialist Rebecca Lomax (Indianapolis, Ind./South Port) led the Cardinals at the non-scored meet with a pair of individual victories and also ran the first leg of the winning 4x100m relay. In addition, Lomax's winning mark of 1.75m (5-8.75) in the high jump was a Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championship automatic qualifying mark.
“We had really good competition from the other MAC schools that were here,” Ball State head coach Randy Heisler said. “I also thought all the other non-league schools added a lot to today's meet. Overall, I thought our team competed very hard. We are getting better every week, and we are just trying to move up on the MAC performance list as we approach the conference meet.”
Lomax would also win the long jump with a career-best effort of 5.60m (18-4.5), place second in the 100m dash (career-best time of 12.23) and place sixth in the 100m hurdles (15.29) over the course of the meet.
In addition to the strong effort from Lomax in the field events, junior Zenée Gadson (Glassboro, N.J./Classboro) took home top billing in the triple jump with a career-best distance of 11.39m (37-4.5).
On the track, senior Courtney Edon (New Palestine, Ind./New Palestine) would celebrate senior day with an event victory, as she took top honors in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 11:08.10. In fact, the Cardinals would sweep the top four spots in the event.
Rounding out Ball State's individual event winners was Carley Shannon (Williamsburg, Va./Bruton) who won the 5000m run in time of 18:42.58.
The Cardinals would also sweep the women's relay events with a time of 47.44 in the 4x100m relay and a clocking of 3:54.40 in the 4x400m relay.
In addition to the team's season-high seven event wins, Ball State's student-athlete also tallied 17 career-best performances at the Cardinal Invitational.
The Ball State outdoor track & field team returns to action next week with some members attending the 49th Annual Hillsdale College Gina Relays (April 23-25) and others attending the RedHawk Invitational (April 25) hosted by Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.
