Women's Swim and Dive Heads to Toledo

MUNCIE, Ind. -- The Ball State women's swimming and diving team will travel to its final Mid-American Conference meet when it heads to Toledo, Ohio on Saturday afternoon. They will take on Toledo at 1 p.m. in the UT Student Recreation Center.
Ball State is coming off of a week of no competition, but prior to that the Cardinals rounded out home action in the Lewellen Aquatic Center against MAC opponent Miami. Ball State ultimately fell to Miami 186-111, despite racking up 19 top-three finishes in the final home event of the season.
Senior Carlena Magley turned in two individual event wins, paired with two second place finishes on the day. Magley clocked 1:55.38 in the 200 freestyle for first, along with a 53.06 time in the 100 freestyle, where she barely snagged first after being followed by Miami's Annie Marquiss at 53.07. Magley's other success came in the 50 free with a 24.36 time for a second place finish, and in the 400 free relay to round out the meet with another second place time at 3:33.90.
Sophomore Katie Horn rounded out the Ball State top finishes when she was first to touch the wall in the 200 fly at 2:08.20, and in the 100 fly with a time of 58.65. Horn was also in a narrow event with Miami's Kathleen Dodson trailing her at 58.73 for second.
All three Cardinal divers found new career high success on both the one and three meter boards this afternoon. Sophomore Brittany Penn reached the NCAA competition cut with a 266.40, surpassing the 265.00 minimum on the one meter, which is also a top-ten team best, while fellow sophomore Quinn Bixler marked a score of 268.58 on the three meter board. Freshman Taylor Fiew marked her new career-bests scores of 249.83 and 240.00 on the one and three meter boards, respectively. This will be the first time since the 2011-12 season that Ball State will bring two divers to the NCAA Zones in the same year, including Penn and junior diver Madie Zirzow.
Last weekend, the Toledo dropped a 197-103 score at Miami on Jan. 31. The Rockets women's team won five event finishes throughout the 16 events.
Junior Lauren Comer placed first in two events on Saturday, including the 200 and 500 freestyle with times of 1:53.50 and 5:03.24, respectively. Freshman Katrin Streicher also finished with two wins in both the 100 and 200 butterfly, after clocking in times of 57.41 and 2:06.43.
The final win of the day was recorded by senior Maria Bargardi in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:02.58, while also finishing second in the 100 backstroke.
The Rocket divers' success came from senior Allison Belcher, who finished second in the three-meter dive with a score of 298.20, which was just more than two points behind the first-place finisher. She also finished third in the one-meter dive.
Looking ahead, the women's swimming and diving team will be round out regular season action at the Ohio State Winter Invitational on Feb. 14-15 at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion in Columbus, Ohio before heading into the MAC Championships Feb. 25-28.
