February 14, 2015 | Gymnastics
Ball State's gymnastics team tallied a 193.550 to 193.275 victory over Western Michigan Friday night to improve to 1-2 in Mid-American Conference action.
The Cardinals claimed individual titles on three events, while sweeping the top three spots on the floor, which was their final event of the evening and clinched the victory.
"We are really excited how the team worked together in this competition and had our first win of the season," Ball State head coach Joanna Saleem said. "It came down to the last few routines of the evening, and we came out on top. There were some really exciting performances tonight. Erin Patchey did an awesome routine on floor and Jessica Leko and Baylee Bell were fabulous on beam. When you are competing with any team in the MAC you have to make every performance count. It took the entire team effort to earn this win. We had some mistakes tonight, but this team is learning how to recover from those mistakes and be competitive. We are really going to need that competitive mindset as we head into the second half of the season."
Ball State was behind 96.6 to 96.45 heading into the third rotation when it posted a 48.575 as a team on the beam and a 48.525 on the floor to claim the victory.
On the floor, Erin Patchey claimed the title with a career high 9.875, while Kayla Beckler and Sarah Ebeyer tied for second with 9.800 marks. The 9.800 was a career high for Beckler.
Jessica Leko won the beam with a 9.800, while Baylee Bell tied for second with a 9.775, which tied her career high on the event.
The meet opened with the Cardinals on the vault and Denasiha Christian winning the top spot with a 9.750.
On the bars, Beckler finished second with a 9.775, while Angela Durkac tied for third with a 9.725.
With the win, Ball State improved to 1-6 on the season. The Cardinals will compete at Eastern Michigan Sun., Feb. 22 at 1 p.m.
