
Men's Swim & Dive Finishes Third In EMU Invitational

YPSILANTI, Mich. – The Ball State men's swimming and diving team completed the annual Eastern Michigan Invitational on Saturday evening with a team score of 643 points, which placed them third overall.
The day kicked off with the 200 medley relay, in which Logan Kisinger, Zach Reichle, Tanner Barton and Cole Smith finished fourth with a time of 1:35.23. The mark earned 29 points for the Cardinals for a solid start to the full day of action.
The race was followed up by the 400 IM, in which junior Jacob Eckert was the top finisher for Ball State after he touched the wall in 4:16.90 for a sixth place overall finish.
Fellow junior Bradley Ridge was the top Ball State finisher in the 100 butterfly, in which he posted a 50.75 finals time, substantially quicker than his 53.28 seeded time.
The event was followed up by the 200 freestyle where junior Andrew Carlson touched the wall first for the Cardinals for a fifth place finish. Carlson marked a 1:44.34 final in the race.
In addition to his relay success, Reichle earned a fourth place finish in the 100 breaststroke with a 58.36 time. Reichle's seed had him pegged for a 1:01.73 time. Reichle's relay partner Kisinger earned an eighth place individual finish as well in the next event, the 100 backstroke, with a 53.63 final.
The morning session was closed out with the 800 free relay, in which Banistre Lienhart, Barton, Middleton and Carlson earned a fifth place finish in 7:09.51. The evening action picked up with the 200 free relay, where Kisinger, Reichle Austin Green and Smith opened with a 1:25.78 time for fifth.
Freshman Alex Nickoli was the top finisher for the Cardinals in the first individual event of the evening, the 500 freestyle. Nickoli touched the wall in 4:48.45, drastically quicker than the 5:02.21 seeded time for the freshman.
In the 200 IM, Eckert marked another individual top place for the Cardinals when he posted a 2:00.73 final for 10th. The race was followed up by the 50 free, in which Smith earned a fourth place finish in a solid 21.31 time.
In diving action, freshmen Lane Sawyer and Gabe Dean competed in three-meter action on Friday afternoon, while they took on the three-meter event on Saturday afternoon. Sawyer marked scores of 173.05 in one-meter action, as well as 181.05 on the three-meter. Dean earned scores of 179.00 and 154.60 in one- and three-meter competition, respectively.
The two-day event was closed out with the 400 medley relay, where Kisinger, Reichle, Ridge and Smith earned a 3:30.87 final for fifth.
Eastern Michigan took the Invitational title with 1252 points, while Wayne State followed in second with 761.5 points. Ashland's team followed Ball State in fourth with 558 points, while Tiffin University fell in fifth with 138.5 points, while IUPUI rounded out the competition with 91 points.
The Ball State men's swimming and diving squad will be back in action on Friday, Jan. 8 when they travel down to Indianapolis, Ind. to participate in co-ed competition with IUPUI and Xavier.
