December 16, 2015 | Football
MUNCIE, Ind. – Even though the Ball State football season is over for 2015, several former players are competing on the national stage in the NFL as that league heads towards the conclusion of its regular season. Below are some updates on several former Cardinals.
Jonathan Newsome (2011-13): Newsome is now in his second season with the Indianapolis Colts. The outside linebacker has made an appearance in 11 games in 2015 and tallied 13 tackles. As a rookie, Newsome led Indianapolis with 6.5 sacks. Newsome was a two-time All-MAC selection for the Cardinals, highlighted by a first team pick in 2013.
Eric Patterson (2011-14): Patterson has seen action for two teams this year – Indianapolis and St. Louis. Patterson played in two games for the Colts early in the season before being let go. St. Louis signed him to its practice squad in early October. Patterson was then moved to the active roster a week ago and saw playing time in the 21-14 win over Detroit. The defensive back was a two-time All-MAC honoree while with the Cardinals. He finished with six interceptions and 189 tackles in his Ball State career.
Willie Snead (2011-13): Snead is in his first season with New Orleans after spending much of the 2014 season on the Carolina Panthers' practice squad. He ranks second on the Saints in receiving yards (798) and yards per reception (15.3). Snead has twice reached 100 yards receiving in a game this year, including last week at Tampa Bay where he piled up seven receptions for 122 yards in the 24-17 win. At Ball State, Snead ranks second in career receiving yards (2,991) and receptions (223).
Keith Wenning (2010-13): Wenning was called up to the active roster for the Cincinnati Bengals this week. He signed with the Bengals as a free agent this past June and played in three preseason games, passing 6-for-13 for 44 yards with one interception. Wenning was on Cincinnati's practice squad for the first 13 games. He holds Ball State's career record for passing yards (11,402) and touchdowns (92).
Meanwhile, former running back Jahwan Edwards (2011-14) is currently on the Jacksonville Jaguars practice squad list.
