Swim & Dive Holds 12th Annual Doug Coers Invitational

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State women's swimming and diving program will welcome Grand Valley State to the 12th Annual Douglas A. Coers Invitational at Lewellen Aquatic Center on Saturday, Nov. 21 with the Ball State men's swimming and diving team. The event is slated for a 1 p.m. start, while the team will hold a poster signing session at the completion of the meet.
The Cardinals have had a couple weeks off from competition, after an action packed weekend in which it split action on the road at Miami on Oct. 30 and with Eastern Michigan on Oct. 31. Ball State fell in the conference competitions, 188-109 to Miami and 179-115 to Eastern Michigan.
In diving action at Miami, senior Madie Zirzow put on a show when she earned a score of 289.95 on the one-meter, which is an NCAA zone qualifying score, places her second overall in the Ball State record book, and earned her a second place finish against the RedHawks. Zirzow also finished third in three-meter action with a season-best score of 267.22.
In the lanes against the RedHawks, sophomore Amanda Kedzierski topped the 100 breaststroke by touching the wall in 1:06.06. Kedzierski also earned a third place finish in the 200 breast with a 2:27.54 final, in addition to two second place finishes in the 400 medley relay (3:58.13) and 200 freestyle relay (1:39.60).
Top finishes for the Cardinals against Eastern Michigan included junior Courtney Mudd's second place finish in the 100 backstroke (1:00.09), as well as junior Katie Horn's time of 2:08.85 for a second place finish in the 200 butterfly. Horn also went on to cinch first in the 100 fly in a 58.17 final.
Freshman Liz Madison was a standout in the 1000 and 500 freestyle against the Eagles, earning third in both events, with times of 10:44.73 and 5:16.37, respectively. Both times marked new career-bests for the Normal, Ill. native.
Sophomore Amanda Kedzierski was the first Cardinal to touch the wall in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:06.62, which landed her a third place finish. Teammates Jessica Extine and Allie Kolz each earned third place honors of their own, in the 50 free (24.77) and the 200 back (2:11.41), respectively.
The combination of Grand Valley State's men's and women's swimming and diving programs hold a 10-1 overall record, including a nine meet winning streak. Most recently, the Lakers downed the University of Indianapolis 134-109 in men's competition and 159-89 in women's on Saturday, Nov. 14 on the road.
Looking ahead, the women's swimming and diving team will split up to take on both the Miami Invitational and the Eastern Michigan Invitational after Thanksgiving Break. The swimmers will participate in Oxford, Ohio from Dec. 3-5, while the divers will compete Ypsilanti, Mich. from Dec. 4-5.
