October 24, 2015 | Women's Swimming and Diving
AKRON, Ohio - The Ball State women's swimming and diving team competed in double dual action Friday evening on the road against both Toledo and host Akron. The Cardinals had a strong showing in which it claimed 15 top-five finishes, although they fell to Mid-American Conference Defending Champion Akron 221-78, and to Toledo 195-105.
"Although we lost to two strong MAC opponents, we showed determination and had some season-best and career-best performances," Ball State women's swimming and diving head coach Kristy Castillo said. "It's nice to see some ladies stepping up and taking control of their races. We need more of that tomorrow against Buffalo and McMaster."
Sophomore Amanda Kedzierski posted two individual, and four overall top-five finishes for the Cardinals. Kedzierski earned the highest finish for Ball State when she was second to touch the wall in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.33), which was then followed by a fifth place finish in the 200 breast (2:26.96). In addition to her individual performance, Kedzierski opened the meet with a fourth place finish in the 200 medley relay (1:48.50) when she combined with juniors Courtney Mudd, Katie Horn and Jessica Extine. Kedzierski then rounded out the day with a third place finish in the 400 freestyle relay (3:37.37) with teammates Extine, Lauren Elston, and Kimberly Scott.
In addition to two top-five relay runs, Extine found individual success in both the 50 free (24.59) and 100 free (53.76), in which she finished third and fifth, respectively.
A Noblesville, Ind. native, Horn also clocked two top-five finishes for the Cardinals when she earned a third place finish in the 200 butterfly (2:09.86), and finished fourth in the 100 fly in a 58.87 fashion.
In diving action, senior Madie Zirzow led the Cardinals when she finished fourth in both one-meter (236.65) and three-meter diving action (251.20). Prior to landing a Ball State diving high on the day on the three-meter for a third place finish (252.10), junior Quinn Bixler scored seventh on the one-meter with 218.75.
The women's swimming and diving team will continue to power through the busy weekend on the road tomorrow, where it will take on both Buffalo and McMaster at noon in Buffalo, N.Y.
